Viability and sustainability of agricultural holdings.

ViaFarm Project

The basic goal of the agricultural policy of every country is to ensure food security for the entire population. Considering the challenges facing modern agriculture - growing population, increasing poverty especially in rural areas, climate change and environmental degradation - it is clear why sustainable agricultural production is becoming imperative.

In the Republic of Serbia, 99% of the total number of agricultural producers are individual farms. These farms mobilize the largest part of the most important natural resource of our country - land. Specifically, individual farms cultivate 90% of the total available agricultural land in the Republic of Serbia and represent a key link in the process of supplying food to the entire population.

Therefore, the topic of the sustainability of agricultural farms is particularly uninteresting, both to the creators of agricultural policy and to the wider scientific community. The ViaFarm project deals with the viability of individual farms. In particular, the goal of the project is to evaluate the economic sustainability of agricultural holdings, together with other two dimensions of sustainability - social and ecological. Also, the goal is to first identify and then quantify the impact of various factors on the economic sustainability of agricultural holdings in the Republic of Serbia. In this way, the expected outcome of the project is recommendations that will enable a more efficient implementation of strategies for the development of the agricultural sector in our country.
